During my visit to Kingston and Gananoque to explore the famous 1000 Islands, I decided to spend a night in Kingston before heading back to Toronto. For this stay, I chose the Rosemount Inn , a boutique hotel known for its historic architecture and quiet residential setting. This was actually my second time staying here at this hotel.
What makes this property special is that it doesn’t feel like a typical hotel. Instead, it feels more like staying in an old family restored historic home. With its Victorian architecture, cozy interiors, and peaceful garden, the Rosemount Inn offers a relaxing retreat right in the heart of Kingston.
Location
The Rosemount Inn is located in the Sydenham neighbourhood of Kingston, Ontario, on a quiet residential street, and one of the biggest advantages of this hotel is its location. It’s close enough to downtown Kingston that you can easily walk to restaurants, parks, and the waterfront, but far enough away that the area feels calm and private. If you’re arriving by train, the inn is about a 15-minute drive from the Kingston VIA Rail station, making it easy to reach by taxi. There may be a bus option to take you to the VIA Rail station, but I have not explored that yet.

History of Rosemount Inn
Rosemount Inn is housed in a Victorian home built in 1850 by William Coverdale, a renowned English architect who worked on several historic buildings in Kingston. Originally, the house served as the family home of Edward Hardy, a dry goods merchant. The building was designed in the style of a Tuscan villa, and many of Coverdale’s architectural signatures are still visible today, particularly the elegant arches seen in the hallways and exterior.
Initially, the house had three bedrooms, with the rear portion serving as servants’ quarters, which today have been converted into guest rooms. In 1990, the home officially opened as a bed-and-breakfast inn, welcoming travellers who wanted a more personal experience than a traditional hotel.
Architecture and Design
One of the most appealing things about the Rosemount Inn is how it blends historic architecture with modern interior design. While the building maintains its Victorian structure, the interiors feel clean and modern with neutral tones, simple décor, and minimal clutter. The property also features a beautiful outdoor garden area, with outdoor seating spaces where guests can relax. Because of its residential style and quiet surroundings, the inn feels less like a hotel and more like staying at a thoughtfully designed private home.

The Main Building and Coach House
Most of the guest rooms are located in the main house, which is also where you’ll find the dining room, a shared lounge and seating areas. Throughout the house, you’ll find small reading nooks and corners where guests can relax or work quietly. Behind the main building is the Coach House, a separate structure that once served as the property’s carriage house. Today, the Coach House includes additional suites: the Edwards Suite and the Queen Studio. These rooms offer a bit more privacy compared to the rooms in the main house.
Check-In Experience and First Impressions
Because Rosemount Inn is a boutique property, the check-in process is slightly different from traditional hotels. There is no front desk or reception counter. Instead, the inn uses what they call a “text concierge.” The day before arrival, guests receive the front door access code, instructions on how to check in, and a contact number for questions or emergencies. It feels somewhat similar to an Airbnb experience.
When you enter the house, you step into the foyer where you’ll find a table with envelopes labeled with guest names. Inside the envelope (the one with your name of course), you will find your room key and room number. On that same table, there are usually freshly baked cookies, so you can enjoy a nice welcome treat. This level is also where you would find the lounge and dining room, along with a few guest rooms.
Room Review: Queen Classic
This was actually my second stay at the Rosemount Inn. I had visited earlier in the year and I stayed in the Queen Classic room, located on the first floor of the main building. The Queen Classic room was compact but full of character. The bathroom was also small but well designed, with good toiletries and a rainfall shower. One of the highlights of that room was a private balcony overlooking the garden.
Room Review: Premium Queen with Balcony
For my most recent stay, I was in a Premium Queen room, located on the second floor of the main building. Compared to the Queen Classic room, this room felt like a clear upgrade in terms of space and layout. The room had a larger seating and dressing area, a fireplace, and a private balcony. The bathroom size was similar to the Queen Classic room, which is understandable given that the building is historic and structural changes are limited.
However, the most surprising feature of the room was something I didn’t even know existed before arriving. Inside the room was a small staircase leading to a tower room on the third floor. At the top, I found a cozy reading and writing nook, tucked away in a quiet corner of the house. It felt like the perfect space for a writer, or really anyone looking for a peaceful place to think or relax.

Amenities and Breakfast Experience
The Rosemount Inn keeps amenities simple, focusing more on comfort and atmosphere than resort-style facilities.
Complimentary Breakfast
Breakfast is included with your stay and served buffet-style in the dining room from 7:30 AM to 9:30 AM. Both times I stayed here, the breakfast selection was excellent. Guests can choose to enjoy their meal in the dining room, in their room, or outside in the garden during warmer months.
Other Amenities
Unlike larger hotels, the Rosemount Inn does not have a pool, gym, or televisions in the rooms. This is probably intentional as the inn was apparently designed to feel more like a quiet retreat, encouraging guests to slow down and relax.
Parking and Practical Details
Parking at the inn is free, although there are only a limited number of spaces available on the property. If the lot is full, there is also free street parking nearby.
Price and Value
Prices vary depending on the season. During my first stay in the spring, the Queen Classic room cost CAD $326.29 for one night. For my visit in the fall, the Premium Queen room cost CAD $247.98 for one night. I must mention that I originally booked the Queen Studio in the Coach House, but due to a room issue I was upgraded to the Premium Queen room.
Compared with other hotels in Kingston such as Hochelaga Inn, Smith Hotel, and the Marriott by the waterfront, I felt the Rosemount Inn offered very good value, especially considering the location, breakfast inclusion, and unique character of the property.
.If you are looking for a quiet boutique stay in Kingston, the Rosemount Inn is an excellent option. The combination of historic architecture, comfortable rooms, thoughtful design, great location, and complimentary breakfast makes it a great choice for travellers who want something more personal than a typical chain hotel. I would happily stay here again on a future visit.
