Top 12 Things to Do in Elora, Ontario: A Perfect Day Trip from Toronto

One of the great things I love about Ontario, and Canada as a whole is that you only need to drive an hour or two away from the city, and you would be in a whole different world. Elora- only 1.5 hours- from Toronto downtown feels like a scene from a hallmark movie and is the perfect escape from Toronto’s chaos. I have been to this town about 3 times now, so as you can tell, I really enjoy coming here.

This picturesque village is known for its historic limestone buildings, dramatic cliffs, and scenic river views along the Grand River. And with its blend of outdoor adventures, artsy boutiques, cozy cafés, and cultural spots, Elora offers the perfect escape from city life. Whether you’re looking for nature, food, shopping, or history, there’s plenty to do here, even in just one day.

Here are 12 of the best things to do in Elora if you’re planning a visit.

Why Visit Elora

The village of Elora sits where the Grand River meets Irvine Creek, creating a dramatic gorge surrounded by towering limestone cliffs. The town is famous for historic 19th-century limestone architecture, scenic river views and natural landscapes, boutique shops and art galleries, outdoor recreation and hiking trails. It’s small enough to explore on foot but packed with lots of things to see.

Activity 1. Swim at Elora Quarry Conservation Area

One of the most popular attractions is the Elora Quarry Conservation Area. The quarry is a former limestone quarry surrounded by 12-metre-high cliffs, creating a stunning natural swimming hole. Today, visitors come here to swim in the clear turquoise water, relax on the small beach, or walk the 1-kilometre loop trail around the quarry. The quarry is typically open from June to September. Because it gets very busy during summer, tickets must be purchased online in advance, usually for a 4-hour time slot.

Activity 2. Relax at Bissell Park

Another beautiful outdoor spot is Bissell Park. Located along the Grand River, this park offers scenic boardwalks, picnic areas, and views of a nearby waterfall. It’s also one of the main gathering spots in town and hosts events throughout the year, including Elora’s farmers’ market during summer.

Activity 3. Visit the Elora Farmers’ Market

If you’re visiting on a Saturday, stop by the Elora Farmers’ Market. The market runs from May to October on Saturdays from 9 AM to 1 PM at Bissell Park, and then from October to December, it is held indoors at the Jefferson Elora Community Centre. It’s one of the best ways to experience the local community.

Activity 4. See the Tall Man Statue at Elora Green Space

In the heart of downtown you’ll find Elora Green Space. This small public square sits at the intersection of Mill Street and Metcalfe Street. The most famous feature here is the quirky Tall Man Sculpture, which has become one of the village’s most recognizable landmarks. It’s a fun photo stop while exploring downtown.

Activity 5. Walk Across the Jack MacDonald Pedestrian Bridge

The Jack MacDonald Pedestrian Bridge is one of the best places to enjoy views of the river. This pedestrian bridge crosses the Grand River and offers a perfect vantage point for photos of the Elora Mill Hotel & Spa. The bridge connects Mill Street West to Carlton Place, leading visitors directly into the historic shopping district. The bridge was rebuilt in 2019 and has become one of the most photographed spots in town.

Activity 6. Visit the Historic Elora Mill & Spa

Perched above the river gorge is the Elora Mill Hotel & Spa. Originally built in the early 1800s as a grist mill, the building has been transformed into a luxury hotel, spa, and restaurant. Even if you’re not staying there, it’s worth visiting for the views of the Grand River and surrounding cliffs. The contrast between the historic stone structure and the modern spa is stunning. I have so many great things about this place that I am planning to spend a night here the next time I visit Elora.

Activity 7. Explore the Shops at Elora Mews

Just across from the Jack MacDonald pedestrian bridge is Elora Mews. This courtyard-style plaza is filled with boutique shops, cafés, and small restaurants. You’ll find clothing boutiques, Antique stores, Home décor shops, and Artisan goods. It’s a great place to browse and pick up unique local finds.

Activity 8. Enjoy the Views at Victoria Park and Elora Gorge

For some of the best natural views in town, head to Victoria Park. The park sits along the edge of the Elora Gorge, where steep cliffs rise 22 metres above the river. From here you can see where the Grand River meets Irvine Creek. There’s also a staircase that leads down to the creek below, offering a closer look at the gorge and a view of David Street Bridge.

Activity 9. Wander Through Downtown Elora

Simply walking around downtown Elora is one of the best things to do. The historic streets are lined with 19th-century limestone buildings that give the village a postcard-like charm. Along the streets you’ll find independent boutiques, artisan studios, bakeries and cafés, ice cream shops and restaurants. During weekends and summer months, the area often features street performers and outdoor patios.

Activity 10. Try Local Drinks at Elora Brewing & Distilling

If you enjoy craft drinks, you should visit Elora Brewing Company and Elora Distilling Company. The brewery is a popular local hangout serving craft beer and comfort food, while the distillery produces small-batch spirits like gin and whisky. Both are great stops during a day exploring the village.

Activity 11. Browse Unique Finds at Mermaid in Elora

One of the most unusual shops in town is Mermaid in Elora. This massive store feels like an adult version of a candy shop. With several rooms filled with quirky and colorful items, it’s easy to spend a lot of time exploring everything from home décor to fun novelty items.

Activity 12. Visit the Elora Centre for the Arts

The Elora Centre for the Arts is the cultural heart of the village. The center features rotating art exhibitions, workshops and community programs, and a gallery shop featuring local artists. Admission is free, although donations are encouraged. There’s also free parking on-site and street parking nearby.
