Hôtel & Spa Le Germain Charlevoix Review- A Luxury Countryside Escape in Baie-Saint-Paul

There are hotels that give you a clean room and a functioning shower and call it a day. Then there are places like Hôtel & Spa Le Germain Charlevoix, that give you a memorable experience that recalibrates your expectations for what hospitality is supposed to feel like. I spent two nights here recently, and I already know I’ll be back.

After my time in Quebec City , I decided to visit to the Charlevoix region and spent two nights at the hotel. From the peaceful Nordic spa to the farm-inspired architecture and mountain views, here is what it is like to stay at one of Québec’s most unique countryside hotels.

Location

Hôtel & Spa Le Germain Charlevoix is located in Baie-Saint-Paul, a picturesque town in Québec’s Charlevoix region, about 90 minutes northeast of Québec City. Baie-Saint-Paul is known for its art galleries, charming streets, and beautiful landscapes. It sits between the St. Lawrence River and the Charlevoix mountains. The hotel itself is located just outside the town center on a large countryside property surrounded by farmland and mountain views. I was visiting in the fall, and the views of the surrounding mountains from the hotel was stunning!

The Scenic Drive Through Charlevoix

Getting to the hotel is part of the experience. The drive from Québec City winds through rolling hills, rivers, and mountain landscapes, and doing this trip in late September meant I got to see vibrant fall foliage along the way. Since I was driving alone, I didn’t get a chance to take pictures, but I was in awe all through the trip.

Taking the Charlevoix Train to the Hotel

Another interesting way to arrive is by taking the Train de Charlevoix. This scenic train route runs between Québec City and La Malbaie, stopping directly at the hotel in Baie-Saint-Paul. The train typically arrives at the property at 10:30 AM on its way toward La Malbaie and at 2:30 PM on the return trip to Québec City and operates from June to November. The hotel also offers train packages, where you can get a train ticket included with room reservation. I may explore this option the next time I visit the hotel.

Brief History of the Property

The land where the hotel sits was once home to one of Canada’s largest wooden farms. At the entrance of the property, you will find a scale model showing what the original farm looked like. In 2012, the site was transformed into Hôtel La Ferme, a design-forward hotel concept inspired by the agricultural history of the property. Then in 2015, the property was acquired by the Germain Hotels group, which renovated and rebranded it as Hôtel & Spa Le Germain Charlevoix, elevating it into a luxury boutique hotel. Despite the upgrades, the property still reflects its farming heritage through its architecture and layout.

First Impressions and Check-In Experience

The hotel design feels like a modern farmhouse, combining natural wood materials with glass and contemporary architecture. Check-in was quick and welcoming. Because it was my first time visiting, the staff took time to explain how the property was organized and pointed out where my building was located.

Service throughout the stay was excellent. From the front desk to the spa staff and restaurant team, everyone made an effort to ensure guests felt comfortable and well taken care of. One helpful detail- if you book directly through the hotel, you can request late checkout at no additional cost. On my departure day, I was able to stay until 2 PM.

The Main Building

The central building, Le Bâtiment Principal, serves as the heart of the property. This is where you will first arrive at. Here you will find the reception area, two restaurants, meeting spaces, and a cozy lounge. The hotel’s main restaurant, Les Labours, is located upstairs of the main building and serves breakfast made with local ingredients along with beautiful views of the surrounding landscape. On the lower level, Le Bercail offers a more casual dining experience for lunch and dinner. I did not dine at Le Bercail during my stay, but from the reviews I read, it appears the food here is great. I did however have breakfast at Les Labours restaurant.

Architecture and Farm-Inspired Design

One of the most unique aspects of Le Germain Charlevoix is its architecture. Rather than a single building, the hotel is made up of five pavilion-style buildings, inspired by traditional farm layouts. In total, the hotel has 145 rooms spread across these five buildings, which helps maintain the peaceful countryside atmosphere.

Room Review: Bergerie Queen Classic

For my first night, I stayed in a Bergerie Queen Classic Room in the La Bergerie building, the largest building on the property. The room was compact but thoughtfully designed with a clean, minimalist style. The architecture of the building is inspired by structures historically used to house sheep, which explains the name Bergerie.

The Queen Classic room has a comfortable queen bed with soft linens, simple, modern décor, and a private terrace perfect for a quiet morning coffee. The bathroom was also beautifully designed with rainfall showerheads, dimmable lighting, and spa-like finishes. Everything felt clean, calm, and designed for relaxation.

Room Review: Bergerie Family Room with View

I was enjoying my stay at the hotel so much that I decided to extend my trip for another night. Since my original room was no longer available, I moved to La Bergerie Family Room, located in the same building. This room was larger and had big French windows that filled the space with natural light. The views from this room were incredible, overlooking the Nordic spa, the surrounding farmland and mountains in the distance.

Because it was designed for families, the room included a queen bed and a bunk bed. So it can comfortably accommodate up to four people. The bathroom design was similar to the previous room with rainfall shower, but it had separate toilet and shower areas, which is especially helpful for families.

The Setting

One of the most memorable aspects of the hotel is its setting. The property sits on a working farm, and you can walk around the grounds to see gardens, open fields, and farm animals. Between the mountains and the St. Lawrence River, the views around the property are beautiful in every direction. I recommend taking time to visit the garden area, the staff working there were very welcoming and allowed me observe for a while. You  would also find the large animal section close to the garden areas with Cows, Rabbits, Chickens … it really is a working farm!

Amenities and Nordic Spa Experience

The Nordic spa is one of the hotel’s main attractions. Phones and tablets are not allowed in the spa area however, which is understandable as it helps maintain the quiet and relaxing atmosphere. The spa facilities include a Finnish sauna, eucalyptus steam room, hot outdoor pools, cold pools, nordic showers, and a snow fountain so you get to do a typical Nordic cycle. I went through the cycle multiple times; it was such a relaxing feeling. Guests can add spa access as part of a package when booking a room. I did this for one day and ended up spending several hours there. Indoor section of the spa has spaces where you can relax, read, or even take a nap! Massage treatments are also available, but they tend to fill up quickly, so booking ahead is recommended. I was visiting on a public holiday weekend so I unfortunately was not able to get a slot.

The hotel also offers an outdoor pool (which was closed for the season while I was there) and a well-equipped fitness center located in La Bergerie building.

Dining at Les Labours

During my stay, I had breakfast both mornings at Les Labours, and it quickly became one of my favorite parts of the experience. The restaurant serves a generous buffet breakfast featuring local ingredients, fresh pastries, and a wide variety of options. I believe most of their ingredients come directly from the onsite farm. Talk about a true ‘farm-to-table’ experience. Since I booked a package that included breakfast, the buffet was already included in my rate.

Parking and Convenience

Parking at the hotel is FREE99, which is a great benefit for a property of this quality. Honestly, I can’t remember the last time I was able to park for free at an hotel in Canada. The parking areas are spacious and easy to access, and the hotel also offers EV charging stations. It may seem like a small detail, but it adds a lot of convenience for guests arriving by car, especially if you’re spending a few days here.

Price and Overall Value

There are several booking packages available depending on what you want included.

For my stay, 1 nigh tin the Bergerie Queen Classic + breakfast + spa package came up to CAD $410.68 and my second night in the Bergerie Family Room + breakfast came up to CAD $375.80. Total for my night stay was just under CAD $800

Considering the design, spa experience, service quality, and peaceful setting, I felt the price was very reasonable for a luxury boutique property.

Hôtel & Spa Le Germain Charlevoix is ideal for travelers looking for rest and reconnection. It works especially well for couples seeking a quiet getaway, travelers interested in wellness and Nordic spa experiences, families exploring the Charlevoix region, and skiers visiting Le Massif de Charlevoix, which is only about 25 minutes away.

If you stayed here before, let me know what your experience was.
