I think Kelowna is the most beautiful city in Canada. A trip to this city would make it hard to dispute. Kelowna is set along the shores of Okanagan Lake and surrounded by vineyards, mountains, and orchards, offering a perfect mix of outdoor adventure, local culture, and world-class wine.

Why Visit Kelowna in the Okanagan Valley
Located in the heart of the Okanagan Valley, this lakeside city is known for its scenic cycling trails, vibrant farmers’ markets, peaceful gardens, and some of Canada’s best wineries. The city of Kelowna sits in one of the most scenic regions of western Canada and you’ll find vineyards and wineries across rolling hills, beautiful lakefront beaches, outdoor activities like cycling and hiking, and a lively food and farmers’ market. If you’re planning a trip, here are seven unforgettable experiences you shouldn’t miss in Kelowna. T.
Activity 1. Bike or Hike the Kettle Valley Trail and Myra Canyon Trestles
One of the most popular outdoor activities near Kelowna is the Myra Canyon Trestles, located inside Myra-Bellevue Provincial Park. The trail follows part of the historic Kettle Valley Railway, which once connected communities across the region. Today, the route has been converted into a cycling and hiking trail.
As you walk through this trail, you would pass 18 wooden trestle bridges and 2 tunnels carved through the rock with stunning canyon views. The full trail stretches about 12 kilometres one way, so a round trip can reach about 24 kilometres. If you’re biking, the terrain is mostly flat, which makes it manageable for most riders, although you would be crossing a number of suspended wooden trestles so maybe something to consider if (like me) you are scared of heights.
You can start from either Myra Station (Trestle #18) or Ruth Station (Trestle #1). Bike rentals are also available near the entrance at Myra Station (which is where I started from).
FYI, The park is about 40 minutes from downtown Kelowna, but the final part of the drive includes a rough service road, so it’s good to be prepared, especially if your bikes are attached to your vehicle.
Activity 2. Visit the Kelowna Farmers’ Market
If you’re here in Kelowna on a weekend, a visit to the Kelowna Farmers’ and Crafters Market is a must. This lively market runs every Saturday from April to October in the Landmark District from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Here you’ll find fresh fruits and vegetables grown in the valley, artisan crafts and handmade products, food trucks and street food, live music and entertainment. It’s one of the best ways to experience the local culture and taste what the Okanagan region has to offer.
Activity 3. Explore Kasugai Gardens
For a peaceful escape in the middle of the city, visit Kasugai Gardens. Located right behind Kelowna’s City Hall, this beautiful Japanese-style garden was created to celebrate the friendship between Kelowna and its sister city in Japan.
Inside the garden you’ll find koi ponds filled with colourful fish, stone lanterns and bridges, carefully designed landscaping and greenery. It’s a quiet and relaxing place to slow down during a busy day of sightseeing.
Activity 4. Walk Through Downtown Kelowna and Bernard Avenue
In summer, downtown Kelowna becomes especially lively thanks to an initiative called “Meet Me on Bernard”. During this event, Bernard Avenue transforms into a pedestrian-only street stretching from St. Paul Street all the way to the waterfront. The area fills with outdoor restaurant patios, street performances and live music, public art installations, local shops and markets. From Bernard Avenue, you can easily walk down toward the lake to watch boats and paddleboards on the water.
Activity 5. Relax at City Park on Okanagan Lake
If you continue walking toward the waterfront, you’ll arrive at City Park. This large lakeside park is one of the most popular gathering places in Kelowna. It’s the perfect spot for picnics by the lake, watching boats on the water, swimming or relaxing on the beach, and just enjoying views of Okanagan Lake. Toward the end of the park, you’ll also find a water park and beach area that overlooks the nearby bridge.
Activity 6. Cruise Okanagan Lake
One of the best ways to appreciate Kelowna’s beautiful setting is from the water. I booked a 90-minute afternoon cruise with Kelowna Cruises, which offered fantastic views of the city and surrounding hills. As the boat moved across Okanagan Lake, it was easy to see why the region is so famous for its scenery. If you’re traveling with a group, another option is renting a private boat to explore the lake at your own pace.
Activity 7. Go Wine Tasting in the Okanagan Valley
No trip to Kelowna would be complete without visiting a winery. The Okanagan Valley is widely considered Canada’s premier wine region. The area’s diverse microclimates allow wineries to produce a wide range of wines, from crisp whites to rich reds. Some of the most well-known wineries are Mission Hill Family Estate Winery and Quails’ Gate Winery.
Pro tip: Consider booking a guided wine tour so nobody in your group has to worry about driving.
Kelowna offers an incredible mix of outdoor adventure and local culture. Whether you’re biking historic trails, tasting local wine, or cruising across Okanagan Lake, this beautiful city truly captures the spirit of the Okanagan Valley.
